Frindle by Andrew Clements

Frindle, written by Andrew Clements, is an amazing tale of a 5th grader that creates a new word that is added to the language we use daily. Nick Allen, the main character of the story, has always been great at finding ways to waste time in class. Once in third grade he turned his classroom into a tropical island using palm trees and real sand, and in fourth grade he chirped like a red-winged blackbird throughout class! He is pretty successful at getting the entire class off task by asking "thought-grenade" questions that waste the entire class period.  That is until he meets his match in his language arts teacher Mrs. Granger. Nick tries to aviod working for Mrs. Granger by asking about where all the words in the dictionary come from. This plan backfires when she assigns him to complete an oral report on the subject of word origination. This sparks Nick's genius and inspires him to create a new word for pen...FRINDLE! The launch of this new word sparks war between the youthful rebel and strict English teacher over power and language.

Through this WebQuest you will challenge yourself to take on the role of Nick Allen and create your own new word that can be added to the dictionary. Furthermore, you will market your new word through poster creations, audio recordings and tv commercials to promote use of your new word. Let's see if your new word is as catchy as Nick's word did. Good Luck!
